The present status of pavement recycling in Japan
General research on pavement recycling started in Japan in the 1970's and has met social needs such as the disposal of increasing pavement wastes, reduction of repair and maintenance expenses and the policy of conserving resources and energy. The types of pavement recycling in use in Japan are plant recycling, in-situ base recycling and in-situ surface recycling (hot surface recycling). Plant recycling was investigated first, followed by in-situ base recycling and in-situ surface recycling. The number of constructions utilizing these techniques is increasing year by year. This paper shows the progress in pavement recycling techniques in Japan, gives an outline of the technical guides for pavement recycling (plant recycling, in-situ base recycling and in-situ surface recycling) and provides an evaluation of recycled pavements which was obtained through test paving for performance analysis (A).
