Application of the new French Circular on roughness

The French Road Directorate Circular 2000-36 concerning the roughness specifications for newly constructed or repaired sections on the national network, came into force on January 1st 2001. To apply the technical guide, profile measurements must be made on each layer to see whether the suggested scores have been obtained and to locate and diagnose any local defects which should be corrected before continuing with construction. To help in the localization and diagnosis of defects, signal processing procedures where developed at LCPC. The purpose of this paper is twofold, first to conduct an appraisal of application of the circular and second to describe the technical guide and the signal processing techniques developed to help in the diagnosis of defects. With regard to the last point, application for new construction and rehabilitation works will be presented.
