Validation studies of the Human Vehicle Environment (HVE) program Simulation Model Non-Linear (SIMON)

This paper provides an overview of several vehicle dynamics studies undertaken by TRL which have involved the comparison of physical test data against simulations of the same tests using the Human Vehicle Environment (HVE) compatible simulation program SIMON (SImulation MOdel Non-linear). These comparisons include the performance of two different vehicles whilst braking in a turn, the response of vehicles to vertical deflections, and comparisons between limit driving in restricted road environments. The various projects used SIMON, running within the HVE program to perform 'virtual tests' which could be compared with physical test data. In each case physical vehicle tests provided tri-axial COG (centre of gravity) accelerations, yaw, pitch, roll angle and rate, in addition to detailed speed measurements, driving parameters (such as throttle and brake application), and in the case of the vertical deflection tests, wheel deflection. In each case, there was good consistency between the physical and virtual test data. The consistency of the data was examined in terms of the characteristic pattern of vehicle response to the test conditions and the magnitude of these responses. In several cases it was found that sensitivity testing of key variables allowed 'best fit' simulations to be developed which improved the consistency of the physical and virtual test result.
