TRANSYT: A TRAFFIC NETWORK STUDY TOOL

TRANSYT IS A METHOD OF DETERMINING OPTIMUM FIXED-TIME TRAFFIC SIGNAL SETTINGS THAT ENABLE KNOWN FLOWS TO PASS THROUGH A ROAD NETWORK WITH MINIMUM IMPEDANCE. THE METHOD IS IMPLEMENTED BY A DIGITAL COMPUTER PROGRAM. A TRAFFIC MODEL IS USED IN WHICH ALLOWANCE IS MADE FOR THE FLOW INTERACTION BETWEEN SUCCESSIVE ROAD SECTIONS, FOR THE DISPERSION OF PLATTONS AND FOR FLOW CONTROL BY SIGNALS OR ANOTHER TRAFFIC STREAM WHICH HAS RIGHT OF WAY. THE METHOD OF CALCULATION GIVES A SHORT SOLUTION TIME. GOOD CONVERGENCY ON THE OPTIMUM SIGNAL SETTINGS IS ACHIEVED BY USING A HILL- CLIMBING TYPE OF OPTIMIZATION PROCEDURE THAT MINIMIZES ANY CHOSEN BALANCE BETWEEN TOTAL DELAY AND THE NUMBER OF STOPS. BOTH THE SIGNAL OFFSETS AND THE ALLOCATION OF THE GREEN TIMES CAN BE OPTIMIZED. NETWORKS CAN HAVE UP TO 50 INTERSECTIONS WITH NO RESTRICTION ON THE LAYOUT OF THE ROADS. /RRL/A/
