SafeTrip-21 Connected Traveler: Networked Traveler Transit and Smart Parking

Networked Traveler Transit/Smart Parking (NT-T/SP) involves developing a real-time multi-modal trip planning and traveler information application for the US-101 corridor in the San Francisco Bay Area and conducting a field test and evaluation based this application. This tool is used as a platform to understand the distribution of real-time multimodal information and its effectiveness on traveler behavior, especially in terms of improving travelers’ perception of transit service and encouraging mode shift from single-occupancy vehicle driving to public transportation. A field test involving the first transit-based evaluation of a smart parking project in the U.S. examined the impact on travel behavior resulting from using the smart parking system at the Rockridge Station on the Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) system.
