Congestion Relief by Travel Time Minimization in Near Real Time – Detroit Area I-75 Corridor Study

This project was motivated by the premise that congestion due to traffic accidents and other incidents can be avoided by using computer re-routing models combined with the analysis of voluminous data collected by intelligent transportation systems (ITS). Congestion avoidance reduces travel time and fuel consumption as well as the need for additional roadways and infrastructure, making the transportation system more efficient. The results of this project are targeted at ITS that seek to reduce congestion by better routing large volumes of traffic at a small time interval as opposed to personal travel assistants (PTAs) that route one vehicle at a time. One potential downside of rerouting large volumes of traffic in a small time interval is to simply move the congestion to a different place in the traffic corridor. This requirement is addressed.
