Cataract as the root cause of fatal road traffic accidents in pedestrians
Senile cataracts are a cause of preventable blindness which affect 12-15 million people worldwide, including approximately 3.8 million people in India alone. Legally, vision impairment can affect traffic laws. This paper presents postmortem examinations of pedestrian accident victims where cataracts had caused blindness. In these cases, the authors argue that the drivers were not negligent and should not be charged as such. They conclude that eye examinations should be a regular part of postmortem examinations and injury certificates should be issued for everybody involved in traffic accidents whether they are the victim or not.
