Retrofitting/strengthening strategy for existing bridges using blind bolts as shear connectors

This paper presents a summary of research where blind bolts were used as an alternative for conventional headed stud shear connectors to strengthen an existing composite steel girder bridge in Australia. The use of bolts blind permits the development of composite action between the existing steel girders and the existing reinforced concrete deck, thereby increasing the flexural strength of the girders. Experimental tests illustrated that blind bolts can withstand 92 per cent of their load level rating. This paper also presents the load test results which were conducted to verify composite action at the steel-concrete interface after the retrofit and compare the structural of the behaviour before and after retrofit was carried out.
