Sustainable Goods Supply and Transport in Conurbations: Analysis of Freight Developments and Strategies
This paper describes how freight transport is becoming more and more important in urban areas of Switzerland and also other countries. On the one hand, the authors face negative impacts on the environment and society and on the other hand, urban freight distribution is getting more and more costly because of traffic jams. Within a national research program a project “Sustainable goods supply and transport in Swiss conurbations” has been carried out. The paper shows how the project examined the current situation in urban freight transport and logistics, the key drivers for the future development and also the measures and strategies to make urban freight transport more sustainable. This paper describes the approach and main results of the project and gives recommendations to reach more sustainable freight transport in conurbations.
