A METHODOLOGY FOR LNG TANKER PRELIMINARY DESIGN

This study develops a methodology for LNG tanker preliminary design to be included, in the future, in an overall LNG transportation scheme optimization. This paper begins with a systems analysis of an LNG total transportation scheme which furnishes, through a first cut optimization procedure, the shipowner's requirements. A mathematical model defines for each cryogenic tank patent (technigaz membrane, Moss Kvaerner and Technigaz SSA self supporting spherical tank technique, Gaz Transport membrane and Conch Ocean self supporting) the ship's weights and cost estimations. A design procedure processes the geometrical definintion of several feasible sets of cryogenic tanks for the first three types of tank patents. The procedure goes on analyzing the feasibility of an LNG tanker preliminary design for a set of four input independent variables: the tank configuration, length between perpendiculars, block coefficient and displacement. This feasibility analysis includes generation of ship's lines around the chosen set of tanks, tank fitting, stability analysis. Dual fuel propulsion capability is also investigated.
