ARRB: the first fifty years

This book tells the story of ARRB from the time the idea for a national independent road research authority was first mooted by William Calder in 1924 and its eventual establishment in 1960 with a tiny staff operating out of a range of locations, including an old tram shed. ARRB's major achievments over the last 50 years are documented, as well as the challenges that the organisation has faced when, on more than one occasion, it almost closed its doors through insufficient funding. The story is told as a time-line to highlight not only the challenges faced and achievements over the years but also the links between the services offered. The key element throughout the book is the people who have made ARRB unique. To this end, brief profiles of key personnel who have had a major impact on ARRB are included, together with some recollections of interesting occurrences since it all began.
