Manual of Transportation Engineering Studies, 2nd Edition

This second edition of the "Manual of Transportation Engineering Studies" (MTES) is an updated and expanded version of the1994 MTES, which itself was a revision of the 1976 "Manual of Traffic Engineering Studies", 4th Edition, by Box and Oppenlander. It is designed to aid transportation professionals and communities to study their transportation problems in a structured manner, following procedures accepted by the profession. The manual should be used in conjunction with the Institute of Transportation Engineers' "Traffic Engineering Handbook", "Transportation Planning Handbook", and other resources in order to prove most useful. The primary focus of the manual is on "how to conduct" transportation engineering studies in the field. Each chapter introduces the type of study and describes the methods of data collection, the types of equipment used, the personnel and level of training needed, the amount of data required, the procedures to follow, and the techniques available to reduce and analyze the data. Applications of the collected data or information are discussed only briefly. The focus is on planning the study, preparing for field data collection, executing the data collection plan, and reducing and analyzing of the data. Guidelines for both oral and written presentation of study results are offered. Chapter titles are as follows: (1) Introduction; (2) Glossary of Terms; (3) Communicating Data to the Public; (4) Volume Studies; (5) Spot Speed Studies; (6) Intersection and Driveway Studies; (7) Traffic Control Devices; (8) Compliance with Traffic Control Devices; (9) Travel-Time and Delay Studies; (10) Freeway and Managed Lane Studies; (11) Simulation Studies; (12) Pedestrian and Bicycle Studies; (13) Public Transportation Studies; (14) Goods Movement Studies; (15) Inventories; (16) Parking Studies; (17) Traffic Collision Studies; (18) Alternative Safety Studies; (19) Roadway Lighting; (20) Transportation Planning Data; (21) Environmental Impacts of Transportation Projects; and (22) Traffic Access and Impact Studies.
