AD/HD and Risk of Accidents in Road Traffic

AD/HD og Risiko for Vlykker i Veitrafikk

The report sums up the literature on the association between drivers with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and the relative risk of being involving in road accidents. A meta-analysis based on 13 studies provides relative risks of accidents for several subgroups. The overall relative risk across all studies is estimated to 1.48. For studies controlling for exposure (mileage) the relative risk is estimated to 1.30. Some of the studies comprise high amounts of ADHD-drivers with comorbidity (Oppositional Defiant Disorder [ODD] or [CD] Conduct Disorder) and the relative risk in this subgroup was 1.79. Drivers with ADHD have a higher risk of being involved in personal injury accidents than in property-damage-only accidents. The relative risks for these two levels of injury were 1.90 or 1.19, respectively. Some studies comprise cases with comorbidity, but it is not possible to assess the partial contributions from ADHD, ODD and CD alone.
