Use of virtual driving simulation in testing road marking and signage for safer roads

This paper describes the application of a 3D virtual model and virtual driving trials to improve road markings and signage in the design of a tunneled highway junction in Tokyo, Japan. A 3-panel virtual reality simulator permitted road plans to be experienced from a driver's perspective in a 3D interactive, real-time environment. Driver reactions were then used to assess the visibility of signs, road markings, guidance information, and evacuation routes. Virtual driving trials were performed in two series with the first results indicating that changes in marking size, coloring and placement were necessary. The second series of trials tested the effectiveness of the changed road markings. Finally, on-site trials were also performed. This paper presents the results of the driving simulator trials and their use in the design and testing of road markings to improve safety in a major civil project.
