Country Report: Update on Geometric Design Activities in Austria

Several guidelines have been newly drafted or amended in the course of the past years in order to meet varying aspects of transport demand and traffic composition and adapt to increasing requirements in terms of traffic safety from the point of view of geometric design. Three of these guidelines are described in detail in this Country Report. The novelty of Guideline RVS 03.03.31 Cross Section Elements is the provision that the standard cross section is to be composed of individual cross section elements. This had so far not been compulsory in Austria when determining cross sections – one cross section among a certain number of cross sections had been selected for a particular road category instead. Guideline RVS 03.03.33 Three Lane Roads represents an entirely new approach to this topic in Austria. The elaboration of the Guideline was based on extensive discussions of application criteria, design of changeovers and layout of interchanges to provide for an efficient implementation of 2+1 cross section elements. The brand-new Instruction RVS 02.02.42 gives Recommendations for the Improvement of Motorcycle Traffic Safety with a view to enhancing all other endeavours to avoid traffic accidents with motorized bicycles and/or minimize the danger and the extent of injuries caused by such accidents. It describes situations in which action must be taken, the types of measures to be adopted in order to increase traffic safety, in particular on roads with conspicuous areas and roads with increased risks of motorcycle accidents, and remediary procedures to be introduced in order to respond to accidents.
