Byways to the Past Technical Series: Oberly Island Report. Archeological Data Recoveries at the Fahs II and Oberly Island Sites: Structure, Function, and Context in the Lower Lehigh Valley, Northampton County, Pennsylvania, S.R. 0033, Section 001
Phase III archeological data recoveries were conducted by John Milner Associates, Inc., at the Fahs II (36NM116) and Oberly Island (36NM140) sites, located in Northampton County, Pennsylvania. This work was performed for URS Greiner Woodward Clyde, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation, and the Federal Highway Administration. The investigations were conducted in conjunction with the proposed construction of the S.R. 0033 bridge over the Lehigh River (Oberly Island site) and of Ramp D connecting S.R. 0033 to I-78 (Fahs II site). Phase II research conducted at the two sites concluded that they are eligible to the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) under Criterion D. Based on artifact frequencies, distributions, and raw materials, the Fahs II site was determined to be eligible to the NRHP as part of the Hardyston Jasper Prehistoric District. Geomorphological and archeological data indicated the potential for stratified prehistoric deposits in the Oberly Island site, dating at least to the Late Archaic period.
