A Novel Method for Traffic Bottlenecks Identification in Urban Traffic Network

In the urban traffic network, concurrent traffic congestions are serious problems. They usually occur in fixed positions called bottlenecks. They are sources of the traffic congestions which influence the efficiency of the traffic network. Therefore the first step to improve the transport performance is identifying the traffic bottlenecks. This paper presents a novel two-phase method to identify the traffic bottlenecks in urban road network and analyzes their effect. The method presented in this paper integrates both urban planning and actual traffic flow. In 1st phase, the initial possible areas containing bottlenecks are determined. The authors use urban planning data to determine the reliability of the traffic network and the scope of possible traffic bottlenecks based on fuzzy c-means (FCM) algorithm. Then, in 2nd phase, we use the bottleneck index denoting the match degree between actual traffic data and the network physical attributes to identify the exact bottleneck positions. Finally, we test the effectiveness of two-phase method using an actual urban traffic network. The chosen road network based on network in Jilin, China is built up by Paramics Software according to the actual data obtained from Jilin Traffic Management bureau and Jilin Construction Commission. The simulation results perform in accordance with the practical situation, which can verify the applicability and feasibility of the proposed method.
