The Influence of Automobile Windscreen Rake on Effective Light Transmittance

The authors investigate the theoretical light transmittances at the installation angle of the windscreens of the United Kingdom's ten best selling cars of 2008. The data indicates that in the United Kingdom, the ten most popular automobiles have windscreen rakes that reduce light transmittance to a value close to or below specification for international standards for normal incidence. Relevant authorities should revisit British and international standards for windscreen transmittance in light of the high rake angles that in recent years have become widespread. Tinted windscreens becoming the default option in many models have made the problem considerably worse. Study results also suggest that it may be good to have all glasses given to drivers for low light level driving be untinted and anti-reflection coated.
