PARTIALLY PRESTRESSED CONCRETE: EXAMPLES OF APPLICATION AND FUNDAMENTAL CONSIDERATIONS
BETON PARTIELLEMENT PRECONTRAINT: EXEMPLE D'APPLICATION ET CONSIDERATIONS THEORIQUES
AN ATTEMPT IS MADE TO SHOW WITH EXAMPLES AND THE USE OF FUNDAMENTAL PRINCIPLES THAT PARTIAL PRESTRESSING OFFERS CONSIDERABLE CONSTRUCTIONAL AND ECONOMIC ADVANTAGES, IN PARTICULAR AS REGARDS SMALL STRUCTURES AND PRECAST ELEMENTS. THE DANGER OF CORROSION OR FAILURE THROUGH FATIGUE IS HARDLY MORE CRITICAL THAN IN FULLY PRESTRESSED STRUCTURES. THERE EXISTS AN EXCEPTION IN THE CASE OF PRETENSIONED MEMBERS, FOR WHICH A REDUCTION IN PRESTRESSING IS NOT RECOMMENDED, SPECIALLY IF THE CONCRETE COVER IS THIN AND THE ENVIRONMENT AGGRESSIVE. ACCORDING TO THE AUTHOR THE SIA STANDARD 162 (1968) FOR PARTIAL PRESTRESSING IS FAR TOO RESTRICTIVE. TESTS, AMONG OTHERS AND THOSE CARRIED OUT BY THUERLIMAN,B, HAVE SHOWN THAT TOTAL PRESTRESSING IS NOT NECESSARY TO SUPPORT THE DEAD LOAD OF AND TO LIMIT ADDITIONAL STRESSES IN REINFORCEMENT, WHICH IS NOT PRESTRESSED AT 1500 KGF/CM SQUARED. IN PRINCIPLE IT SHOULD BE POSSIBLE TO USE THE WHOLE RANGE OF PRESTRESSING BETWEEN FULLY PRESTRESSED CONCRETE AND NON-PRESTRESSED REINFORCED CONCRETE WITHOUT EXCEEDING THE STRESS LEVELS PERMITTED AT THE MOMENT.
