THIS BOOK IS DIVIDED INTO FIVE PARTS. THE FIRST PART SUMMARIZES THE VARIOUS ASPECTS OF METALLED ROADS IN RURAL ZONES (HOURLY FLOW, GEOMETRIC CAPACITY, ECONOMIC POSSIBILITIES, SAFETY SPEED, TRAFFIC FLOW, OPTIMUM WIDTH OF A NEW ROAD). IN PART 2, THE AUTHOR MAKES THE ATTEMPT OF ADAPTING THE NOTION OF CAPACITY TO NON-METALLED ROADS. REASONS ARE GIVEN FOR THE LOWER CAPACITY OF NON-METALLED ROADS COMPARED WITH THAT OF SURFACED HIGHWAYS. BASED ON THIS FACT, THE AVERAGE DAILY TRAFFIC FLOW ON NON-METALLED ROADS IS ESTIMATED, TAKING INTO ACCOUNT SEASONAL TRAFFIC CONSTRAINTS, TRAFFIC COMPOSITION, AND TRAFFIC CONDITIONS. PART 3 EXAMINES HOW TO DETERMINE WHEN A ROAD SHOULD BE SURFACED WITH A BITUMINOUS SURFACING. IN PART 4, A COMPARISON IS MADE BETWEEN MAINTENANCE METHODS AND EQUIPMENT. PART 5 COMPARES INCREASES IN TRAFFIC ON METALLED AND NON-METALLED ROADS AND ANALYZES THE COST-EFFECTIVENESS OF SURFACING A ROAD.
