THE DESALINATION OF MARINE SANDS

LE DESSALEMENT DES SABLES MARINS.

THIS LABORATORY STUDY DEALS WITH THE DESALINATION OF TWO TYPES OF SANDS: 1 - CALCAREOUS SHELL SAND USEFUL FOR CEMENT WORKS OR AS CALCAREOUS MATERIAL WHEN TREATED; 2 - QUARTZ SANDS USEFUL FOR CONCRETE, CONSTRUCTION, FILL MATERIAL, ETC. THE DIFFERENT LOCALIZATION OF SALT IN THE TWO TYPES OF SAND DETERMINES THE VOLUME OF WATER NECESSARY IN THE TREATMENT OF EACH. THIS VOLUME OF WATER IS MORE IMPORTANT FOR THE CALCAREOUS SHELL SANDS; THE SANDS REQUIRE A DEGREE OF GRINDING WHICH DEPENDS ON THEIR BIOLOGICAL NATURE. THE METHOD OF ALTERNATE SPRAYING WITH RAIN HAS BEEN USED FOR DESALINATION. THE RESULTS OBTAINED ARE ANALYSED FROM THE POINT OF VIEW OF THE HUMIDITY OF THE SAND, THE INITIAL SALINITY, THE HEIGHT OF SEDIMENT, THE GRANULOMETRY. THE RESEARCH HAS DEMONSTRATED THAT, FOR QUARTZ SAND, THE THRESHOLD OF DESALINATION CAN BE ECHIEVED WITH A VOLUME OF WATER WHICH INCREASES THE PRICE BY 5%, WHICH IS VERY ACCEPTABLE. FOR CALCAREOUS SHELL SANDS, INCREASE IN PRICE IS MORE SIGNIFICANT AND THE INVESTMENT IS GREATER (APPROX. 20% OF THE PRICE OF MATERIALS). THE QUANTITY OF WATER NECESSARY FOR WASHING CROSSED IN AN ASYMPTOTIC FASHION THE DESIRED THRESHOLD LEVEL. IT WOULD BE NECESSARY TO USE THE TECHNOLOGY OF CEMENT MANUFACTURE TO REDUCE THIS THRESHOLD LEVEL.
