STATISTICAL ASSESSMENT OF THE LEAD CONCENTRATION IN PLANTS ON ROADWAY VERGES - CAUSED BY EMISSION FROM VEHICLES - WITH A COMPUTERIZED SYSTEM FOR PROCESSING THE DATA

STATISTISCHE ERFASSUNG DER BLEIANREICHERUNG IN PFLANZEN AN STRASSENRAENDERN - BEDINGT DURCH EMISSION VON KRAFTFAHRZEUGEN - MIT ANGESCHLOSSENEM MASCHINELLEM AUSWERTUNGSSYSTEM

THE OBJECT OF THE WORK IS THE SYSTEMATIC, STATISTICAL ESTABLISHMENT OF LEAD CONCENTRATION IN PLANTS ON ROADWAY VERGES IN RELATION TO TRAFFIC FREQUENCY AND DISTANCE FROM THE ROAD EDGE. IT IS POSSIBLE, BY ESTABLISHING THE RELATIONSHIP FUNCTIONS, TO OBTAIN THE LEAD CONTAMINATION ALONG ANY SELECTED ROADWAY BY USING A STATISTICAL METHOD. THE MEASUREMENTS WERE TAKEN ON BOTH SIDES OF A ROAD ON DIFFERENT TYPES OF VEGETATION (GRASS, MIXED GRASS AND PLANTS WITH A LARGE SURFACE AREA, WOODS, FIELDS AND FALLOW LAND) AT DISTANCES OF 1 TO 30 METRES, DURING THE MONTHS OF AUGUST AND JULY. THE RESULTS WERE PROCESSED USING VARIANCE AND REGRESSION ANALYSES. THE VARIABLES ROAD WIDTH AND WIND DIRECTION HAD SIGNIFICANT EFFECTS, WITH THE LEAD CONCENTRATION REACHING DIFFERENT VALUES FOR THE VARIOUS VEGETATION TYPES. IT WAS 50 TO 60 METRES FROM THE ROAD EDGE BEFORE NORMAL VALUES WERE OBTAINED. THE MOST SUITABLE FOR PLANTING ROADWAY VERGES APPEARS TO BE MIXED GRASS AND PLANTS WHICH IS OFTEN MOWED BUT IS NOT FED BY THE RESULTING CUTTINGS. THE EFFECTS OF LEAD CONCENTRATIONS ON HUMANS AND ANIMALS IS DISCUSSED IN DETAIL.
