STUDY OF INTERGRANULAR FRICTION IN FRESH CONCRETE. NEW IDEAS ON THE FLOW OF VIBRATED FRESH CONCRETE

THE STUDY OF THE MECHANICAL BEHAVIOUR OF FRESH CONCRETE MUST TAKE INTO ACCOUNT THE INTERGRANULAR FRICTION WHICH OCCURS WHEN THE CONCRETE IS BEING PLACED. THIS ARTICLE EXAMINES THE INTERNAL FRICTION OF THE AGGREGATES ALONE INDEPENDENTLY OF ANY RHEOLOGICAL INFLUENCE OF THE PASTE AND TAKES ACCOUNT OF THE SPATIAL POSITION OF THE AGGREGATES IN THE CONCRETE. MEASUREMENTS OF RIGIDITY WERE MADE ON MIXTURES IN WHICH THE CEMENT PASTE WAS REPLACED WITH A NEWTONIAN LIQUID THAT WAS OF LOW VISCOSITY AND ADEQUATE DENSITY AT ORDINARY TEMPERATURE. A PHYSICAL PARAMETER WAS SELECTED TO CHARACTERIZE INTERGRANULAR FRICTION IN FRESH CONCRETE. THE LCL WORKABILITY METER WAS UTILIZED TO STUDY THE RESPECTIVE INFLUENCES OF THE PASTE AND OF THE AGGREGATES ON THE FLOW OF FRESH CONCRETE. THIS SHOWED THE COMPLEXITY OF THIS TYPE OF FLOW AND DEMONSTRATED THAT IT IS SOMETIMES SPURIOUS TO PHYSICALLY CHARACTERIZE FRESH CONCRETE BY A SINGLE VALUE OBTAINED IN A SINGLE TYPE OF EXPERIMENT.
