A NEW APPARATUS FOR ASSESSING THE POLISHING BEHAVIOUR OF MINERALS IN THE LABORATORY

A POLISHING APPARATUS WAS DEVELOPED IN THE TECHNICAL UNIVERSITY OF DRESDEN WHICH CORRESPONDS TO THE TEST STANDARD SPECIALLY FORMULATED FOR THE DETERMINATION OF THE POLISHING INDEX OF 8/11 2 MM MINERAL AGGREGATES. IT CONSISTS OF A TURNTABLE 750 MM IN DIAMETER, ROTATING AT 30 RPM, AND WHICH CARRIES SIX TRAPEZOIDAL TEST SPECIMENS. A POLISHING DISC FACED WITH RUBBER AND RUNNING AT 230 RPM IS PRESSED AGAINST THE TEST PIECES WITH THE ADDITION OF CONTROLLED QUANTITIES OF ABRASIVES, INITIALLY FOR 180 MINUTES WITH A PRESSURE OF 3 KP, AND THEN FOR A FURTHER 120 MINUTES WITH A PRESSURE OF 1 KP. IN CONTRAST TO THE ENGLISH APPARATUS THIS EQUIPMENT PERMITS THE APPLICATION OF GREATER ABRASIVE FORCES, SO THAT THE ASSESSMENT OF THE POLISHING BEHAVIOUR CAN BE CARRIED OUT WITH A MAXIMUM TEST TIME OF SIX HOURS. AFTER COMPLETION OF THE TEST A SPECIFIC POLISHING INDEX CAN BE DETERMINED FOR EACH PARTICULAR MINERAL WITH THE AID OF AN SRT PENDULUM. THE ARTICLE DESCRIBES THE CONSTRUCTION OF THE APPARATUS AND THE CONDITIONS FOR ITS USE.
