THE THEORY OF EXTERNAL LOADS ON CLOSED CONDUITS IN THE LIGHT OF THE LATEST EXPERIMENTS

A MATHEMATICAL THEORY WAS DEVELOPED OF EXTERNAL LOADS ON CLOSE CONDUITS AND OF THE SUPPORTING STRENGTHS OF PIPE CONDUITS. THIS THEORY APPLIES TO ALL KINDS OF CLOSED CONDUITS AND TO ALL CLASSES OF FIELD CONDITIONS ON CONDUIT CONSTRUCTION. THE THEORY WS DEVELOPED FROM EXPERIMENTS CONDUCTED OVER 20 YEARS. THE THEORY IS SUPPORTED STRONGLY BY ALL ACTUAL WEIGHINGS ON RECORD OF LOADS ON CLOSED CONDUITS DETERMINED IN EXPERIMENTAL RESEARCHES; AND BY EXTENSIVE FIELD DATA OBTAINED BY SEVERAL SERIES OF EXAMINATIONS OF ACTUAL CONDUITS IN USE. MEASUREMENTS ARE PRESENTED OF LOADS PRODUCED BY EMBANKMENTS, AND CORRELATION TESTS SHOWING THE RELATION BETWEEN STRENGTH OF PIPE BY TEST AND HEIGHT OF FILL THAT CAUSES FAILURE.
