FACTORS INFLUENCING FLEXURAL CRACKING OF PRECAST, REINFORCED AND PRESTRESEED CONCRETE BEAMS IN THE LIGHT OF POSSIBLE NON-UNIFORMITY IN MANUFACTURE
THE FACTORS WHICH INFLUENCE CRACKING ARE DISCUSSED WITH REFERENCE TO HIGH STRENGTH BEAM TESTS CARRIED OUT SINCE 1933. IT IS ESTABLISHED THAT IN ADDITION TO CONCRETE COVER, STEEL PERCENTAGE, AND SIZE AND DISTRIBUTION OF REINFORCEMENT, THE BOND EFFICIENCY (MAINLY DEPENDENT ON SHAPE, SIZE AND SURFACE CONDITIONS OF THE STEEL AND STRENGTH AND COMPACTION OF THE CONCRETE AROUND THE STEEL) AFFECTS THE MAXIMUM CRACK WIDTH. IT CAN BE LIMITED BY GOOD DESIGN AND DETAILING IN SPITE OF VARIATIONS IN MANUFACTURE. EFFICIENT SUPERVISION AND GOOD WORKMANSHIP ARE NEEDED TO MINIMIZE NON-UNIFORMITY. /TRRL/
