FIBROUS CONCRETE: A NEW DIMENSION IN BRIDGE DECK CONSTRUCTION
THE BRIDGE-DECK OVERLAY AT WINONA, MINNESOTA, THE FIRST SUCH APPLICATION FOR STEEL-FIBER-REINFORCED CONCRETE, MAY PROVE TO BE A SIGNIFICANT STEP IN THE SOLUTION TO THE AGE-OLD PROBLEM OF BRIDGE-DECK DETERIORATION. CERTAIN PRECAUTIONS MUST BE TAKEN IN THE BATCHING, PLACING AND TESTING OF STEEL-FIBER-REINFORCED CONCRETE. RECOMMENDED MIX PROPORTIONING PROCEDURES MUST BE ADJUSTED TO MEET THE REQUIREMENTS FOR WORKABILITY OR PLACEABILITY. FIBERS SHOULD BE MIXED WITH AGGREGATE BEFORE ADDING CEMENT AND WATER TO OBTAIN UNIFORM CONCRETE AND ELIMINATE BALLING.
