The Z49.1 Standard is the authority on safety in welding. The current revision, replacing the 1967 version, has special significance in light of the recent federal legislation concerning occupational safety. Written by the ANSI Standards Committee Z49, a group of experts involved in various aspects of welding safety, this revised document is a valuable source of data on safe welding methods and requirements. The 1973 Standard provides detailed procedures and instructions for safe practices to be followed in gas welding and cutting, arc welding and cutting, and resistance welding operations. In addition, special attention is focused on fire prevention and protection, protection of personnel, and health protection and ventilation. The section on health protection and ventilation describes ventilation requirements for various conditions and evaluates a particular ventilation method in terms of "threshold limit values." A separate section in the standard calls attention to welding and cutting precautions required in the construction industry and cites specific sections of this standard which are pertinent or given additional information.
