STUDY OF TOTAL, VISCOUS AND WAVE RESISTANCE OF A FAMILY OF SERIES-60 MODELS; FURTHER DEVELOPMENT OF A PROCEDURE FOR DETERMINATION OF WAVE RESISTANCE FROM LONGITUDINAL-CUT, SURFACE-PROFILE MEASUREMENTS
The purpose of the study is two-fold. Attempts to apply the longitudinal cut method of Moran to a family of Series-60 models indicated the necessity of modifying the procedures for analyzing the surface profile data. As a result both experimental techniques and the analytical procedures were reviewed. The modifications that were found to be necessary in both the measurements and the analysis to obtain reasonable and reliable results presented. The second purpose was to examine the wave, viscous, and total resistances of a family of Series 60 models to determine the effect of scale and block coefficient, to compare the consistency of the sum of the separately determined viscous and wave resistance with the measured total resistance, and to attempt to derive, from the trend of the viscous-drag curves, a possible procedure for estimating the full-scale viscous resistance.
