TESTS ON AND EXPERIENCE WITH LONGITUDINAL AND TRANSVERSE JOINTS /IN GERMAN/
THE FACTORS DETERMINING THE SPACING OF LONGITUDINAL JOINTS AND OF ANCHORS ARE STUDIED. WITH REGARD TO TRANSVERSE JOINTS, CONDITIONS UNDER WHICH EXPANSION JOINTS CAN BE ELIMINATED ARE DESCRIBED AND THE CAUSE OF CRACKING STUDIED TOGETHER WITH THE POSSIBLE ELIMINATION OF DOWELS AND JOINT FILLING. THE NEW CONSTRUCTION METHOD DESCRIBED IS CHARACTERIZED BY THE FOLLOWING ASPECTS: THE SURFACING IS LAID ON A LAYER OF HOT BITUMEN-COATED GRAVEL, ELIMINATING THE NEED FOR BACKING PAPER. NO DOWELS NOR STEEL MESH ARE USED; THERE ARE NO EXPANSION JOINTS EXCEPT IN SPECIAL CASES. NO JOINT FILLING IS UTILIZED; 2 TO 2,2 MM WIDE TRANSVERSE JOINTS ARE SAWN AT INTERVALS OF 5 M. TO ELIMINATE JOINT FILLING, AND THE LONGITUDINAL JOINTS, SHRINKAGE JOINTS AND NARROW SAWN JOINTS ARE NOT FILLED. CONSTRUCTION COSTS OF PAVEMENTS BUILT ACCORDING TO THIS METHOD ARE LOWER; THE PAVEMENTS ARE LESS PRONE TO CONSTRUCTION DEFECTS AND EASIER TO MAINTAIN; THEY CAN BE COMPLETED THE DAY AFTER CONCRETING. THEORETICAL STUDIES AND EXPERIMENTAL MEASUREMENTS SHOW THAT THEY ALSO HAVE A LONGER LIFE-TIME THAN PAVEMENTS BUILT ACCORDING TO TRADITIONAL CONSTRUCTION METHODS. /LCPC/RRL/
