CORROSION CHARACTERISTICS OF HY-80 STEEL WELDMENTS AS A RESULT OF EXPOSURE TO SOLID ACID FORMULATIONS
Sulfamic acid descalant solutions attack HY-80 steel plate and associated weldments more aggressively than does inhibited hydrochloric acid (MIL-STD-796 (SHIPS) of 3 Jan 1966). Moreover, the HY-80 material is more susceptible to attack from the sulfamic acid formulations than is plain carbon steel. Repeated corrosion exposure test cycles indicate that shelf-life criteria influence the corrosiveness of the sulfamic acid formulations on HY-80 steel. Acid formulations in which the diethylthiourea (DETU) is intimately mixed and stored for long time periods caused the greatest attack on the HY-80 material. This confirms previous studies which showed that degradation occurs in the Evaporator Scale Removing Compound where the DETU is mixed with the sulfamic acid. Thus, the effectiveness of the inhibitor is reduced. (Author)
