PREDICTION OF HURRICANE SURGE: AN INVESTIGATION FOR CORPUS CHRISTI, TEXAS, AND VICINITY

The report presents a detailed method of computing the storm surge on the open coast arising from an approaching hurricane, and then the routing of this surge into a partially closed bay (Corpus Christi) in combination with local wind set-up to predict the water levels within the bay. Examples of computations have been performed on a given synthetic hurricane traveling over an assumed traverse. The effects of various friction factors and other coefficients have been illustrated. Variations in these coefficients were tried to enable an accurate appraisal of the refinements which need to be made in the authors' estimation. The problem was studied in three phases: 1) hurricane surge on the open coast, 2) wind set-up within Corpus Christi Bay, and 3) routing of surge from the open ocean into Corpus Christi Bay.
