DYNAMIC RESPONSE OF LATERALLY LOADED OFFSHORE PILING

This report discusses in detail, a mathematical model which was developed to described the dynamic response of a laterally loaded offshore pile. Considerations in formulating the problem included interaction effects between the pile and its water environment, nonlinear soil properties, and geometrical non-linearity of the pile. A close comparison of results from dynamic tests conducted on different size model piles and simulated results from the mathematical model support the accuracy of the model and analysis technique. Parameter studies were conducted to determine the influence of such factors as the effects of soil modulus of subgrade reaction, soil damping, wave-pile interaction, and axial load, on the pile's response. Based on the parameter study, the author concludes that the magnitude and distribution of the soil subgrade modulus with depth of embedment considerably influences the dynamic response, the soil does not appear to dissipate large amounts of energy of the vibrating system, maximum displacements were greater when determined from a dynamic analysis as opposed to static analysis, and an error of as much as plus/minus 10% in maximum displacements may result by neglecting axial loads.
