TEMPERATURE DURATIONS AT VARIOUS DEPTHS IN BITUMINOUS ROADS

THE TEMPERATURE OF A BITUMINOUS ROAD LAYER HAS A CONSIDERABLE INFLUENCE ON ITS ELASTIC PROPERTIES AND HENCE UPON ITS ABILITY TO SPREAD WHEEL LOADS. METHODS ARE AVAILABLE FOR MEASURING THE TEMPERATURE SUSCEPTIBILITY OF THE ELASTIC PROPERTIES, BUT HITHERTO NO RELIABLE INFORMATION WAS AVAILABLE ON TEMPERATURE DISTRIBUTION IN ROADS THROUGHOUT A TYPICAL ENGLISH YEAR. BETWEEN 1961 AND 1966 MEASUREMENTS WERE MADE OF THE DURATION FOR WHICH THE TEMPERATURES IN THE AIR, AND AT VARIOUS DEPTHS IN TWO FLEXIBLE ROAD SECTIONS, WERE WITHIN SUCCESSIVE RANGES OF 5 DEGREES C BETWEEN - 10 DEGREES C AND + 50 DEGREES C. EACH SECTION HAD 4 IN. OF ROLLED ASPHALT SURFACING AND A 10 IN. HOGGIN SUB-BASE; THE 10 IN. BASES WERE ROLLED ASPHALT AND LEAN CONCRETE. THE RESULTS ARE PRESENTED IN SEVERAL TABLES AND GRAPHS. THE TEMPERATURES IN THE WEARING COURSES RANGED FROM 10 DEGREES C TO +50 DEGREES C WITH SMALL RANGES AT LOWER DEPTHS. THE THREE UPPER LAYERS OF THE SECTION WITH THE ASPHALT BASE WERE ABOVE 20 DEGREES C FOR AN AVERAGE OF ABOUT 115 DAYS PER YEAR OVER THE FIVE YEARS. THE DURATION ABOVE 20 DEGREES C IN THE WARMEST AND COLDEST YEARS WAS ABOUT +16% AND -26% FROM THE MEAN. THE CORRESPONDING FIGURES FOR THE SECTION WITH THE LEAN CONCRETE BASE ARE 105 DAYS, +10% AND -21%. THE UPPER THREE LAYERS OF THE SECTION HAVING THE ASPHALT BASE WERE GENERALLY WARMER FOR LONGER PERIODS THAN THOSE IN THE OTHER SECTION. THE DURATIONS OF THE AIR TEMPERATURE IN THE VARIOUS RANGES GIVE ONLY A ROUGH GUIDE TO THE DURATIONS OF THE ROAD TEMPERATURE. /RRL/A/
