MAIN ECONOMIC INDICATORS

PRINCIPAUX INDICATEURS ECONOMIQUES

This publication is an essential source of statistics for the student of the international business cycle. It is the result of an extensive study of the significance of statistics of short-term change, which reflects the use of the most up-to-date techniques of tabular and graphical presentation. Main Economic Indicators is designed to provide, at a glance, a picture of the most recent changes in the economy of Member countries. In addition, it supplies the user with a collection of indispensable international statistics for any review of the economic developments affecting the OECD area in the past few years. Special features that distinguish this publication include the emphasis on graphical techniques to bring out important changes in key indicators and the extensive use made of time series adjusted for seasonal fluctuations. These features are due largely to an intensive utilisation of the OECD electronic computer. A number of supplements provide the reader with background material on such topics as consumer prices and industrial production. Systematic collections of monthly historical statistics over the last decade are published every two years as companion volumes to Main Economic Indicators. The economic indicators selected come under the following main headings: national accounts, industrial production, deliveries, stocks and orders, construction, retail sales, labour, wages, prices, home finance, interest rates, foreign finance, balance of payments and foreign trade. An important free service to subscribers of Main Economic Indicators was started in November 1967 with the publication of the first installment of Sources and Methods. These installments are published at irregular intervals. They describe on a country-by-country basis the methodology used by national authorities to compile their economic indicators. This is an essential text for an accurate interpretation of developments as shown by the statistics selected for Main Economic Indicators.
