A NOTE ON SUSPENSION BRIDGE ANALYSIS
A METHOD IS DESCRIBED FOR MEASURING LOADING IN THE HANGERS OF SUSPENSION BRIDGES WHICH ARE TOO FLEXIBLE FOR ANALYSIS BY ELASTIC THEORY. A SIMPLE, NON-DIMENSIONAL FORMULA FOR HANGER REACTIONS WAS DEVELOPED TO DEMONSTRATE THE HIGH RESERVE CAPACITY OF SUSPENDER SYSTEMS OF SEMI-STIFFENED SUSPENSION BRIDGES. IF THE STIFFENING SYSTEM OF SUCH A BRIDGE IS ADEQUATELY MAINTAINED TO PRESERVE ITS CONTINUITY, IT IS UNLIKELY THAT THE SUSPENDER SYSTEM WILL BE A GOVERNING FACTOR FOR RATING THE BRIDGE FOR HEAVIER HIGHWAY LOADINGS.
