PROPER ATTENTION TO SURFACE TEXTURE CAN REDUCE ROAD SLIPPERINESS. TIRES CONTRIBUTE A TEXTURE TO THE TOTAL TIRE-ROAD INTERFACE, BUT THE GREATEST POTENTIAL FOR IMPROVEMENT IN SKID RESISTANCE IS IN IMPROVEMENT OF ROAD SURFACE TEXTURE. THE RELEVANT SCALE OF TEXTURE IS ON THE ORDER OF 100 MICRO IN. AND A HALF INCH. ROUGH TEXTURES ENHANCCE WATER EXPULSION FROM THE TIRE-ROAD CONTACT AREA AND DAMPING LOSS IN TIRES. IN ADDITION, ROUGH TEXTURES REDUCE THE POSSIBILITY OF SLIPPERINESS DUE TO POOR ROAD WETTABILITY AND THE EFFECTS OF ROAD SALT. /MRS/
