MANAGEMENT OF MARINE DATA SYSTEMS

This research report presents the results of SDCs National Data Program for the Marine Environment study. The report was prepared with the assistance of a marine science ad- visory panel from the Scripps Institution of Oceanography and a Federal agencies data management advisory panel. Information on the data activities of 6 Federal depart- ments, 16 Federal marine agencies, 25 marine data service centers, state and local agencies, private industry and the public are presented. Eighty-five data bases, 58 products and preliminary, 10-year technical development plans for 17 marine data service centers are specifically detailed. Also included in the report are the results of more than 700 in-depth interviews with the principal members of the United States marine community. SDCs analysis of the needs of marine data users; a description and evaluation of the importance of each data type and product; an analysis of the effectiveness and a determination of the upgrading requirements of marine data service centers; an analysis of the marine data management functions and the potential impact of new technology on these functions; and the preparation and justification for a National Data Program for the Marine Environment. This Program includes 10-year technical development plans for the marine data service centers and recommendations for improvements in coordination and information exchange; new data service activities and new products.
