DEVELOPMENT OF THE LOCOMOTIVE ENGINE
A history of the growth of the locomotive from its most elementary form, showing the gradual steps made toward the developed engine, with biographical sketches of the eminent engineers and inventors who nursed it on its way to the perfected form of today. Many particulars are also given concerning railroad development. For over sixty years this book has been a standard reference on American Locomotive History. It was a pioneering work on the history of railroad engineering when published in 1907 and for many years it was the only comprehensive study available. The book is also a history of American Mechanical Engineering in the Nineteenth Century.
