A DESIGN PROCEDURE FOR CONTINUOUSLY REINFORCED CONCRETE PAVEMENTS FOR HIGHWAYS
DESIGN METHODS, INCLUDING THE LOAD-TEMPERATURE- SHRINKAGE DESIGN METHOD, THE TEXAS DESIGN, THE ILLINOIS DESIGN METHOD, AND THE CRSI DESIGN METHOD ARE REVIEWED. THE MAJORITY OF THICKNESS DESIGN METHODS WHICH HAVE BEEN PROPOSED BY INVESTIGATORS WERE BASED ON MODIFICATIONS OF DESIGN METHODS WHICH HAVE BEEN PROPOSED FOR REGULARLY REINFORCED CONCRETE PAVEMENTS. THESE THICKNESS DESIGN METHODS HAVE GENERALLY BEEN BASED ON TESTS ON UNREINFORCED CONCRETE SLABS. THE AASHO ROAD TEST RESULTS WERE USED, BUT THE VARIABLES OF CLIMATE, SUBGRADE TYPE AND SUPPORT, AND DRAINAGE CONDITIONS COMPLICATED THE EXTENSION OF THE AASHO ROAD TEST RESULTS TO OTHER GEOGRAPHICAL LOCATIONS. THEORIES, MODIFIED BY PERFORMANCE EXPERIENCE, ARE PRESENTED TO COMPUTE THE REQUIRED PAVEMENT THICKNESS AND AMOUNT OF LONGITUDINAL STEEL, AND ALSO TO DESIGN THE END ANCHORAGE OR THE JOINTING MEANS AT THE END OF PAVEMENT SECTIONS. THIS DESIGN PROCEDURE FOR PAVEMENT THICKNESS RELATES TO THE AASHO INTERIM GUIDE, AND THEREFORE THIS DESIGN PROCEDURE ITSELF IS ALSO CONSIDERED AN INTERIM OR TENTATIVE ONE.
