DENSITY STUDIES OF ASPHALT CONCRETE
THIS RESEARCH WAS PERFORMED BETWEEN AUGUST 1965 AND AUGUST 1968 FOR THE PURPOSE OF STUDYING COMPACTION WITH A SINGLE STEEL-WHEEL ROLLER ON A NEW YORK STATE TYPE 1A TOP COURSE MIX AND SPECIFICALLY: (1) THE EFFECT OF CONTROLLED NUMBERS OF PASSES OF THE ROLLER ON PAVEMENT DENSITY, AND (2) THE FURTHER DENSIFICATION OF THE PAVEMENT WITH TIME AND WITH SOME LIMITED TRAFFIC. IN ADDITION, DATA TAKEN FROM TWO PAVEMENT OVERLAY PROJECTS COMPLETED IN 1962, BOTH UTILIZING ONLY STEEL-WHEEL ROLLING, ARE ALSO REPORTED. FROM THE MAIN STUDY IT WAS CONCLUDED THAT FOR THIS TOP-COURSE MIX: (1) THE OPTIMAL NUMBER OF STEEL-WHEEL ROLLER PASSES WAS BETWEEN EIGHT AND TWELVE, AND (2) WITH TIME THERE WAS DENSIFICATION IN THE ASPHALT SURFACING, AND A DECREASE IN PAVEMENT REBOUND DEFLECTION. /AUTHOR/
