COMPUTER-DESIGNED ASPHALT PAVEMENT
IN THE FUTURE HEAVILY TRAVELLED STREETS AND HIGHWAYS PROBABLY WILL BE DESIGNED BY A COMPUTER IF A THREE-YEAR-OLD EXPERIMENT UNDERWAY NEAR SAN DIEGO, CALIF. PROVES SUCCESSFUL. THE PROGRAM, FULL SCALE AND UNDER ACTUAL OPERATING CONDITIONS, MAKES USE OF RESULTS FROM THE AASHO ROAD TEST OF 1956-58. THE POSSIBILITY OF A DESIGN FORMULA THAT WOULD TAKE ACCOUNT OF PAVEMENT CHARACTERISTICS BY MECHANICAL PROPERTIES (MODULUS OF ELASTICITY, RESISTANCE TO FATIGUE, TENSILE STRENGTH), AND OF CALCULATED STRESSES, STRAINS AND DEFLECTION QUICKLY EMERGED. SUCH A FORMULA COULD BE USED BY A COMPUTER, AND RESULT IN A PAVEMENT DESIGN THAT WOULD PERFORM TO EXPECTATIONS. /AUTHOR/
