TRAFFIC AS FACTOR IN PAVEMENT DESIGN
THE EFFECT OF LOAD REPETITIONS ON PAVEMENT PERFORMANCE IS EXAMINED AND THE NEED FOR DEVELOPING A TRAFFIC INDEX THAT ACCURATELY DESCRIBES THE LOADS TO BE SUPPORTED BY ANY EXISTING OR FUTURE ROAD OVER ITS DESIGN LIFE IS STRESSED. THE EQUIVALENT WHEEL LOAD CONCEPT IS OUTLINED, AND EXAMPLES GIVEN OF METHODS OF CALCULATING AND USING TRAFFIC INDICES FOR PAVEMENT DESIGN IN THE U. S. AND GREAT BRITAIN. RESULTS ARE PRESENTED OF THE LOADOMETER STUDIES CONDUCTED IN SWEDEN WITH A VIEW TO DEVELOPING A SWEDISH PAVEMENT DESIGN TRAFFIC INDEX. /SVI/RRL/
