DEVELOPMENT OF CBR FLEXIBLE PAVEMENT DESIGN METHOD FOR AIRFIELDS: A SYMPOSIUM

THE WORK ACCOMPLISHED BY THE CORPS OF ENGINEERS IN CONNECTION WITH THE ADAPTATION OF THE CBR METHOD OF DESIGN FROM HIGHWAY CONSTRUCTION TO AIRPORT CONSTRUCTION IS PRESENTED IN THIS SYMPOSIUM. THE CBR TEST IS PRESENTED SHOWING ITS VALUE AS A DESIGN TOOL FOR FLEXIBLE PAVEMENTS. A SUMMARY IS PRESENTED OF THE STUDY THAT HAS GONE INTO THE IMPROVEMENT OF THE METHOD. THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE ORIGINAL METHOD FOR HIGHWAY DESIGN IS TRACED. THE PROCEDURES BY WHICH DESIGN CURVES WERE EXTRAPOLATED FROM 12,000 LB TO 60,000 LB ARE PRESENTED. STUDY RESULTS ARE PRESENTED OF TESTS CONDUCT- ED ON THE CBR TEST. THE THREE LARGEST ACCELERATED TRAFFIC TESTS THAT WERE CONDUCTED TO OBTAIN DATA FOR THE DESIGN CURVES ARE DESCRIBED AND A NUMBER OF SMALLER ACCELERATED TRAFFIC TESTS ARE INCLUDED. CBR CURVES ARE CORRELATED WITH THE DATA THAT WERE OBTAINED FROM THE ACCELERATED TRAFFIC TESTS AND FROM STUDIES OF ACTUAL AIRFIELD PAVEMENTS. A PROCEDURE IS PRESENTED WHEREBY THE DESIGN CURVES FOR SINGLE WHEELS CAN BE TRANSLATED INTO DESIGN CURVES FOR MULTIPLE WHEEL ASSEMBLIES OF PRACTICALLY ANY COMBINATION.
