INVESTIGATIONS AS TO THE ELASTIC PROPERTIES OF SOILS AND DESIGN OF PAVEMENTS ACCORDING TO THE THEORY OF ELASTICITY
FIELD TESTS CARRIED OUT ON AIRFIELDS IN 1944-48 ARE PRESENTED FOR DESIGNING PAVEMENTS FOR HEAVY WHEEL-LOADS. COMPARISON WAS MADE BETWEEN TEST VALUES AND VALUES CALCULATED ACCORDING TO THE ELASTIC THEORY. WESTERGUARD'S AND HOGG'S FORMULAS WERE USED. THE THEORETICAL PART IS FOLLOWED BY A DESCRIPTION OF BEARING TESTS CONDUCTED IN 1944 AT VASBY ON 6 BY 6-M. CONCRETE SLABS OF DIFFERENT THICKNESSES. THE BASE COURSE WAS 10 CM GRAVEL AND THE SUBGRADE WAS CLAY. CONTINUOUS SETTLEMENT OF THE CLAY LED TO SELECTION OF ANOTHER SITE FOR THE AIRFIELD-AT HALMSJON-IN 1948, WHERE SETTLEMENT OF CLAY WAS ACCELERATED BY USING VERTICAL CARDBOARD DRAINS.
