WIND-INDUCED INSTABILITY OF STRUCTURES. DISCUSSION: CRITICAL WIND SPEEDS FOR SUSPENSION BRIDGES
THE THEORY OF AEROLASTIC STABILITY OF SUSPENSION BRIDGES WAS STUDIED, AND A MATHEMATICAL FUNCTION WHICH FORMS THE BASIS OF THIS WORK, DESCRIBES THE MOTION OF A SUSPENSION BRIDGE DECK, AND REPRESENTS A VERTICAL, ANGULAR, OR EVEN POSSIBLY HORIZONTAL DISPLACEMENT OF THE DECK IS PRESENTED. EXAMPLES ARE GIVEN OF THE EFFECTS OF CRITICAL WIND SPEEDS ON TWO UNSTIFFENED SUSPENSION BRIDGES IN THE USA. IT IS CONCLUDED THAT LINEAR ANALYSIS APPEARS TO BE SUFFICIENT NOT ONLY FOR THE QUANTITATIVE PREDICTION FOR DESIGN PURPOSES OF CATASTROPHIC (DIVERGENT) SUSPENSION BRIDGE MOTION, BUT NON- CATASTROPHIC (FLUTTER) MOTION AS WELL. /TRRL/
