IT HAS BEEN ESTABLISHED THAT FINE MATERIAL, ALL PASSING THE NO. 8 SCREEN WILL PERMIT COLOR RETENTION OF FROM 90 TO 95 PERCENT. THE SECRET TO BETTER COLOR CONDITION IS THE USE OF WHITE AGGREGATE- THE WHITER THE BETTER. IT IS ESSENTIAL THAT SYNTHETIC RESIN COLOR PAVING WHICH IS TRANSPARENT AND PERMITS THE PIGMENT PRESENT TO BE SEEN, BE MIXED IN A CLEAN PUGMILL. TWO PRODUCTION METHODS ARE AVAILABLE' ONE IS A BULK MIX HANDLED AT THE SAME TEMPERATURES AS 85-100 PENETRATION ASPHALT CEMENT, THE OTHER IS A TWO-COMPONENT SYSTEM WHICH CONSISTS OF THE ADDITION OF A 67-BAG OF PLASTIC CHIPS, A 73-POUND CAN OF PLASTICIZING OIL & SUFFICIENT PIGMENT TO PRODUCE ONE TONE OF MIX WITH 7 PER CENT BINDER CONTENT. IF THE BULK METHOD IS USED, IT IS RECOMMENDED THAT THE RESIN BE ADDED THROUGH A FLOW METER, BYPASSING THE ASPHALT WEIGHT BUCKET. FIVE COLORS FOR USE IN PAVING MATERIAL ARE UNDER CONSIDERATION' /1/ RED IS TO BE USED FOR STOP, /2/ WHITE WILL BE USED IN MEDIAN STRIPS, SHOULDERS AND FOR GENERAL DELINEATION, /3/ GREEN WILL DESIGNATE THROUGH LANES, /4/ ORANGE WILL MARK DECELERATION LANES, AND /5/ YELLOW IS TO BE USED TO DEFINE PROHIBITED AREAS SUCH AS GORES AND SAFETY ZONES. COLORED PAVEMENT IS INTENDED TO ALERT DRIVERS TO CHANGING CONDITIONS. IT IS HOPED THAT ACCIDENT RATES IN TROUBLE SPOTS MAY BE REDUCED BY AS MUCH AS 80 PER CENT THROUGH THE USE OF COLORED SURFACES.
