STABILITY OF CURVED BOX GIRDERS -B1
THE RESULTS OF A SERIES OF STATIC TESTS ON HORIZONTALLY CURVED BOX GIRDERS IS PRESENTED. A TOTAL OF SIX BOX GIRDERS WERE TESTED IN ORDER TO EVALUATE THE LOCAL BUCKLING CHARACTERISTICS OF THE COMPRESSION FLANGE AND OBTAIN PRELIMINARY INFORMATION ON THE BEHAVIOR OF CURVED WEB PANELS. BOTH UNSTIFFENED AND LONGITUDINALLY STIFFENED COMPRESSION FLANGES WERE INCLUDED IN THE TEST PROGRAM. TWO GIRDERS WITH TRAPEZOIDAL CROSS SECTION (SLOPING WEBS) AND FOUR GIRDERS WITH RECTANGULAR CROSS SECTION WERE TESTED. THE OVERALL LOAD-DEFORMATION CHARACTERISTICS OF THE SPECIMENS, THE STRESS DISTRIBUTION OVER THE CROSS SECTION, LOCAL BUCKLING OF THE FLANGES, DISTORTION OF THE CROSS SECTION AND THE BEHAVIOR OF THE WEBS IS DISCUSSED. THE TEST RESULTS ARE INTERPRETED AND COMPARED WITH PREVIOUS TESTS OF STRAIGHT GIRDERS AND ANALYTICAL STUDIES OF THE BUCKLING BEHAVIOR OF CURVED GIRDERS. /FHWA/
