IN-PLACE STRENGTH OF CONCRETE: A COMPARISON OF TWO TEST SYSTEMS
DETAILS ARE GIVEN OF TESTS CARRIED OUT ON CONCRETE USING THE REBOUND OR SWISS HAMMER AND A NEW "PROBE" SYSTEM, WHICH HAS BEEN SUGGESTED AS AN ECONOMICAL REPLACEMENT FOR CORE AND CYLINDER TESTS, AND DEPENDS UPON THE PENETRATION OF A STEEL ROD FIRED FROM A STUD GUN AS AN INDEX OF STRENGTH. IT WAS FOUND THAT THE PENETRATION OF THE ROD INTO THE CONCRETE IS AFFECTED BY THE STRENGTH OF THE CONCRETE AND OTHER PROPERTIES SUCH AS AGGREGATE STRENGTH, ELASTICITY OR POROSITY. THIS TENDS TO LIMIT THE ACCURACY OF THE SYSTEM, AND FOR THIS REASON IS NOT RECOMMENDED AS A REPLACEMENT FOR CONVENTIONAL CORE TESTS. /RRL/
