HOW TO RETARD THE AGING OF BITUMEN

THE DATA OBTAINED FROM TESTS OF VARIOUS SUBSTANCES WHICH RETARD OR ACCELERATE THE OXIDATION OF BITUMEN ARE RECORDED AND THEIR SIGNIFICANCE IS DISCUSSED. SAMPLES OF BITUMEN AND ADDITIVE WERE HEATED IN A PORCELAIN VESSEL FOR 400 HR AT TEMPERATURES OF 150 C AND 80 C. EVERY 100 HR THEY WERE EXPOSED TO A QUARTZ LAMP AND THE DEPTH OF PENETRATION WAS DETERMINED EVERY 16 HR. THE ADMIXTURES MOST EFFECTIVELY RETARDING OXIDATION WERE FOUND TO BE SULPHUR AT 0.07 PERCENT, TANNIN AT 0.02 PERCENT, NAPHTHOL AT 0.1 PERCENT, SULPHANILAMIDE AT 0.01 PERCENT, SULPHAPYRIDINE AT 0.05 PERCENT, PYROCATECHIN AT 0.05 PERCENT AND ALIZARIN AT 0.1 PERCENT. SOME OF THE ADMIXTURES WERE ABLE BOTH TO RETARD OXIDATION AND TO RESTORE SUBSTANCES WHICH HAD ALREADY BEEN OXIDIZED. THE SUBSTANCES WHICH WERE MOST EFFECTIVE IN ACCELERATING OXIDATION WERE CARBAMIDE AT 0.1 PERCENT, PHENYL-BETANAPHTHYLAMINE AT 0.5 PERCENT AND FERRONAPHT NO. 1 AT 2 PERCENT.
